Rice Exhibition Space: Discover the History of Vercelli's Rice Fields

Updated: Jan 17

esposizione mondine vercelli

If you pause for a moment in the silence of the rice fields surrounding AMY B&B, try to imagine this landscape a hundred years ago. In spring, it wasn't so quiet. It was filled with voices, songs, and toil.

They were the voices of the rice weeders: thousands of women who came from Veneto and Lombardy to work in the rice fields of Vercelli. Twelve hours a day, knee-deep in water, bent over, clearing the rice of weeds. Their story is one of toil, solidarity, and redemption. And we wanted to preserve it.

A Place of Memory

When we renovated AMY B&B, we knew we wanted to do something special. Not just a place to sleep, but a place that would tell the story of the area.

And what story is more important than the rice weeders, the women who made what you see outside your window possible?

In the courtyard of AMY B&B, in an external glass structure, we created an exhibition space dedicated to the rice weeders of Vercelli.

What You'll Find in the Rice Weeders' Space

The space is composed of two reconstructed rooms, where you can experience firsthand:

📸 Vintage photos of rice weeders working in the rice fields

👗 Clothes and outfits from their time

🛠️ Tools used for their work and in their daily lives

📋 Information panels on the history of rice weeders

All objects have been handed down over time and carefully preserved.

How to Visit the Space

The rice weeders' exhibition space is reserved for guests of AMY B&B and can be visited upon request.

During their stay, anyone who wishes can explore this space with us. There are no set times or fixed schedules: it's a moment of informal sharing, born from conversation and curiosity, just like in the homes of the past.

We tell the story of the rice weeders, guiding guests through objects, reconstructions, and family memories, in a simple and authentic way.

How it works:

  1. Book your stay at AMY B&B

  2. When checking in, ask to visit the rice-workers' area

  3. I'll personally accompany you and tell you the story

  4. You can see, photograph, ask questions

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO PRESERVE THIS MEMORY

Today, the rice fields of the Vercelli area are silent. The work is mechanized, and the rice-workers are no longer there.

But their story must not be forgotten.

  • Because those women, with their hard work, made possible:

  • The wealth of the Vercelli area

  • The first women's union struggles

  • An example of solidarity and resistance

  • The landscape we admire today
