La Baraggia: the "savannah" of Piedmont between wild nature and unique landscapes

Updated: Apr 11

Baraggia Piemonte

When you think of the savannah, the collective imagination immediately flies to Africa, among golden expanses, solitary trees and wild fauna. Yet, there is a place in Italy that surprisingly resembles these scenarios: the Baraggia, a protected natural area located between the provinces of Biella, Vercelli and Novara, often called the "savannah of Piedmont" for its unique characteristics, near our AMY B&B.

What is the Baraggia and where is it located?

The Baraggia is a vast flat area that extends to the foot of the Alps, covering about 6,000 hectares. It includes the territories of Rovasenda, Buronzo, Masserano and other localities in the lower Biella and Vercelli areas. It is an area characterized by clay soils, strong temperature variations and a barren landscape, which make it a particularly suggestive and unusual habitat for Northern Italy.

Why is Baraggia compared to the savannah?

  1. Sparse vegetation and open landscapes

The Baraggia is dominated by grassy prairies, with isolated trees such as oaks and birches that emerge from the ground just like African acacias. During the drier seasons, the yellowish color of the vegetation accentuates this similarity even more.

  2. Peculiar climate and terrain

The poor and poorly drained soils of the Baraggia prevent the growth of lush vegetation, creating an essential and wild landscape that closely resembles that of the savannahs.

  3. Presence of wildlife

Even though there are no lions or giraffes, the Baraggia is home to a rich and diverse fauna: roe deer, wild boars, foxes, buzzards and nocturnal birds of prey are just some of the species that populate this area, contributing to making the environment even more fascinating.

What to do in Baraggia: experiences and itineraries

If you are a nature and adventure lover, Baraggia offers several outdoor activities:

  • Hiking and cycling: Numerous paths cross the Baraggia, allowing you to immerse yourself in this unique landscape. One of the most interesting routes is the one that starts from Rovasenda and crosses the most suggestive areas of the area.

  • Nature photography: The breathtaking views and local fauna make the Baraggia the perfect place for suggestive shots.

  • Birdwatching: Thanks to the presence of numerous birds of prey, birdwatchers will find a true paradise here.
